The Anne Gordon Center for Active Adults commemorated its grand opening on November 1st to celebrate the wide variety of services, which will now be offered within the Raleigh community. Mayor Pro Tem Russ Stephenson, several Raleigh City Council members and Anne Gordon attended the ceremony.

This contemporary 4,600 square foot facility was designed by HH Architecture specifically with the ages 50 plus demographic in mind. The building includes an easy to follow floor plan as well as day-lit interior spaces that decrease glare. The design intention for the interior was to establish a functional, yet welcoming and cozy environment for the clientele.

HH Architecture, in collaboration with Lifespan Design Studio, was able to tailor the facility to the community’s needs by holding public meetings to gather input during the design process. The site was chosen to take full advantage of southern exposure for maximum daylight in the multipurpose room. In addition, the location’s footprint protects old growth trees, which offer green, shaded outdoor space.

The Center contains indoor and outdoor recreational areas for clientele to enjoy, such as an outdoor patio area, a community kitchenette, office and support areas, classroom space and a large multi-purpose meeting room.

The Anne Gordon Center is one of Raleigh’s first city-owned active adult centers along with the Five Points Center. The Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department purposefully designated the facilities as “active adult centers” as opposed to “senior centers” to underscore that the center will be enjoyed by multiple generations of adults.

The Ronald McDonald House of Durham held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of its new expansion. The project added 28 new suites for families, more than doubling the size of the original facility. The expansion also included 26,000 square feet of living space, as well as a community room, expanded play areas, quiet spaces for studying, a chapel, and more.

HH Architecture designed the new facility to create a comfortable, welcoming environment for families of seriously ill children who must travel to receive specialized care at Duke Children’s Hospital. The space was also designed to be LEED Silver equivalent, featuring low maintenance and durable materials, a healthy indoor environment, and naturally day-lit spaces.

The ribbon-cutting featured dignitaries from Duke University Medical Center, Board Members from Ronald McDonald House of Durham, community leaders, and Governor Beverly Purdue.
